Small and Nicely Browned #2

Dimensions (HxWxD): 27 × 18 × 0.3 cm

Materials: Digital print on archival paper with overlying oil paint. Mounted on Dibond

Primary Medium: Painting

This piece is from my 'Nicely Browned' series which evolved from a long painting session, resulting in a lot of paint building up on my face, and entirely covering my eye. I am completely masked. It reminded me of Glenn Brown's work, hence the name. Brown uses images of Frank Auerbach's work as a reference, re-painting Auerbach's thick brushmarks in a completely flat way, removing any indication of expression or trace of the artist. I am very influenced by Glenn Brown's work.   This is the first portrait piece I've made on such a small scale, and really enjoyed working small and seeing what this does to the piece.

I can't remember making it or what my inspiration was (although I was heavily influenced by Frank Auerbach paintings at the time), but I must have decided not to use it in the show. The collection was then lost in a disastrous external hard drive incident and was only recently found again after the hard drive was recovered. I re-discovered this collection and my love for it.

Clashing colours that somehow work together has become a big part of my artwork, abstracting the face underneath the paint, and taking another step further away from traditional portraiture. RAD combines the extreme brightness of geranium lake pink and a purpley magenta, with the comparative dullness of the yellow ochre, and creates a rosy and bright image. My mother is called Rosie and RAD are her initials, so this piece is named after her. RAD also has connotations of 'radical' which was a well used phrase in the 90's by the cool kids, and I like this connection to the 90's as it is suddenly cool and 'vintage'.

One of my favourite collections I made was the 'Thunderean Nobility' pieces. They reminded me of the colours of the 'Thunder Cats', a favourite childhood programme, and I named them after the higerarchy of the thunder cats; the nobility. I really like the sense of the fantastical tribal, and the fictional 'other'. I wanted to expand the 'tribe' through my work so I made 'Thunderean Revolution'. They are the same colours as 'Thunderean Nobility' but are slightly different, an overhaul of the original, a revolution.

This piece evolved from a long painting session, resulting in a build up of paint which entirely covered my eye, masking 'me' completely. It reminded me of Glenn Brown's work, (see image attached) hence the name. Brown uses images of Frank Auerbach's work as a reference, re-painting Auerbach's thick brush marks in a completely flat way, removing any indication of expression or trace of the artist. This is something my work restles with, removing the expressive brushmarks through photography, then re-instating and merging the two together. I am very influenced by Glenn Brown's work.

This piece is called 'Oil & Water' because of the use of both oil paint and water based emulsion in the work. The muted emulsion in the background creates a dripping effect that contrasts with the thick bright oil paint in the forefront. The popping out and muting down aspect this work has because of the two different substances interests me.

I like to name my pieces in quite a cryptic style and seemingly quite serious. In reality they are based on things the pieces remind me of which can sometimes be rather silly. This piece reminded me of a Blue Tit, the colours are exactly the same. A Blue Tit is from the Passeriforme Order, a type of taxonomy of bird species, hence the name 'order of the Passeriformes'. I like to think this is another form of layering and disguising to the work.

I always name my pieces after what they remind me of, and in this case the piece is called 'Buddy Holly' because of the paint sqeezed directly from the tube around the eye, resembling thick rimmed glasses like Buddy Holly used to wear, and also the blue colour reminds me of him for some reason.

They are the same colours as 'Thunderean Nobility' but are slightly different, an overhaul of the original, a revolution.

Thunderean Revolution 2

Dimensions (HxWxD): 52 × 39 × 0.3 cm

Materials: Digital print on archival paper with overlying oil paint Mounted on Dibond

Primary Medium: Painting

The popping out and muting down aspect this work has because of the two different substances interests me.

his piece is called 'Oil & Water' because of the use of both oil paint and water based emulsion in the work. The emulsion in the background creates a dripping effect that contrasts with the thick oil paint in the forefront. I have applied the emmulsion paint over the top of the oil paint coated on my face, creating a cracking effect, and adding a different layer to the work. The popping out, muting down, and cracking up aspect this work has because of the two different substances interests me.
